“BLOGSITES”

Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Under Secretary, CSIR, New Delhi

In today’s cyber world, Internet has crossed all barriers, borders, restrictions, and turned the whole world into a Global village. According to a NASSCOM study, China has more than 100 million Internet users, making it the second largest Internet market after the USA. Internet users in India has soared to 54% over the past year. It is expected to jump to 100 million mark in two years from present 38.5 million. A large number of individuals, academic, commercial, religious, Governmental, Non-Governmental organizations are maintaining their own websites in order to make their existence known in the ‘e-environment’.

The information explosion is such that if you are a computer savvy, you can even design your own aeroplane. If you want to have your own website virtually at no cost, there are ways and means. Such individual websites with no strings attached are otherwise known as “Blogs”. In the e-environment, the word “Blogging” is heard too often. What is a Blog? Blogging is nothing but having one’s own website. It is estimated that more than 5.34 crore Blogsites sites are available on Internet. Companies like Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, etc. are providing free service to Bloggers.

If you want to design your own website, just grab the little mouse on your desk and click on to a wonderful cyber world. You will come across a number of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who can help you in designing your own website, and maintain them for you free of cost. You are free to express yourself, exchange views, meet like-minded people over the net, pursue your likes and dislikes over your own “Blog”.

Internet Service Providers like “MSN Spaces”, “Yahoo! 360o”, “BLOGGER” and FRIENDSTER are the prominent Blogsites in the Blagosphere. These sites are:

"
http://spaces.msn.com" [being used by over 4.5 millions people]
"
http://www.yahoo.com";
http://www.friendster.com”; and
http://www.Blogger.com” [being used by over 8 million people]

"BLOGGER" had a humble beginning; just like any other company in the dot.com boom. It was started by a company called 'Pyra Labs." in San Francisco, USA during the year 1999. Subsequently, it was taken over by the "Google" in the year 2002. It is considered to be the largest one. If information and photos are provided in such sites, they are called “Blogs”. If videos are also posted to the site, then they are called “Vlogs”. In MSN-maintained Blogsites, photos can be uploaded either from PCs or online albums not exceeding 30 MB. A site called “hellobloggerboat” has been providing software for uploading photos. “FRIENDSTER” has been allowing Bloggers to upload photos on payment. If you want to make the Blogsite with some attractive designs, you can get some help from “
www.Blogskins.com”.

The ISPs have been providing all necessary formats and space to amateur Bloggers free of cost. A large number of prominent personalities consisting of P3Ps, statesmen, film stars, politicians, social workers are maintaining their own Blogs to keep in touch with their fans/supporters. You too can jump on the bandwagon. Incidentally, the boy wizard Harry Potter has beaten President Bush and Pope John Paul II to be named "The Most-Blogged Person of 2005" in a poll conducted by "Blog Pulse", an organization monitoring Blogs .

These Blogsites are being mainly used by journalists to a large extent in countries where the mainstream media is censored or is under constant political pressure. A Paris based media watchdog has released a free guide entitled “Reporters Without Borders ‘Handbook for Bloggers and Cyber-Dissidents” which contains necessary advice on setting up and running Blogs. It has also provided certain tips to sneak past Internet censors in countries ranging from China to Iran. The Hand Book includes technical advice on how to remain anonymous online.

One can connect other sites in the form of links. In “FRIENDSTER”-maintained site, the links get themselves connected to Blogsite. Under “BLOGGER”, the links can be uploaded through HTML pages. If a Blogsite is lost due to some reason, “BLOGGER” can retrieve it for you. The most useful feature of Blogs are the visitors who are included in the MSN address book can post (append) their comments on-line.

“HARMONY” is being regularly e-mailed to over 850 persons who had provided their e-mail i.ds. It does not want to lag behind in its noble mission in spreading awareness about rules and regulations governing the Council service and related issues. With a view to reach more and more people even without an e-mail i.d., a Blogspot entitled “harmonycsir” is being launched from January 2006 onwards. It is a replica or an off-shoot of "HARMONY".

Shri Rajasekhar [SO(G), RAB, CSIR], a man with great perseverance and determination to do something to CSIR family, has made a lot of efforts not only in conceptualizing a Blogsite for “HARMONY” but also created an archive. He has also provided hyperlinks with DOPT, CVC, CSIR Websites for reference purposes. This Blogsite besides having the current issue will have back issues right from November 2004 onwards.

In order to maintain the consistency and size of the Blogsite, once the current issue appears on the horizon, November 2004 issue i.e., the first issue listed in the Blogsite will get deleted; the exercise will be repeated every month.

All that you have to do is ..just log in:

It is hoped that our esteemed readers will make use of this site to express themselves for common good within the frame work and conduct of the Council service through ‘e-mail’ i.e.
harmony_csir@yahoo.co.in for the time being, till a link is provided on the Blogsite to directly post their comments on the contents of “HARMONY”. The Blogspot "harmonycsir" shall continue to appear on the horizon as long as it enjoys the trust and confidence of its Founder-Editor, "HARMONY".
